Record-Breaking Generosity: VWU Raises $143,810 on Giving Tuesday
565 donors come together to support students and strengthen the future of the University

ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉútv celebrated an unforgettable Day of Giving on Tuesday, December 2, as alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends rallied together in a record-breaking display of Marlin pride. By the day’s end, VWU raised $143,810 from 565 participants, including 144 alumni—a remarkable milestone in support of students and programs across campus.
Energy and excitement filled the day as the University recognized its Giving Societies, welcomed new 1961 Club members, and cheered on younger alumni who made their first gifts. Support poured in from across Marlin Nation, demonstrating a shared commitment to advancing student success and ensuring that future generations can thrive.
Gifts made on Giving Tuesday strengthened key areas across the University, including:
- Academic Programs
- Annual Scholarships
- Student Life
- Library and Technology
- Excellence Fund
- The Arts@VWU
- Athletics (weight room, baseball, cross country, track & field, golf, lacrosse, softball, tennis)
“Thank you to everyone who joined the MarlinCard Giving Tuesday celebration,” said Sarah Guzzo, director of stewardship. “Marlins showed up in full force, and the impact was incredible. Your generosity strengthens the student experience, elevates our programs, and fuels the momentum that keeps our beloved University moving forward. Days like this remind us what is possible when our community comes together with purpose and passion.”
Guzzo notes that there’s still time to be part of this moment. “As we approach year-end, your support of any amount and to any area creates real opportunities for our students and helps ensure a strong future for generations to come.”
This year’s event marked the exciting return of VWU’s Giving Societies with a renewed approach that celebrates generosity at every level—whether it’s a first gift, years of faithful commitment, or transformational support that shapes the University’s future. Each society recognizes donors whose contributions illuminate the path forward for students, programs, and campus growth.
Lifetime Giving Societies
- Wesleyan Society ($500–$2,499): Honoring early and ongoing generosity that forms the foundation of lifelong support.
- Founders Society ($2,500–$9,999): Recognizing donors whose commitment reflects the pioneering spirit of VWU’s earliest visionaries.
- Beacon Society ($10,000–$49,999): Celebrating leadership-level donors who light the way with impactful support.
- Legacy Society ($50,000+): Honoring visionary supporters whose giving shapes the future in lasting ways.
- Clarke Heritage Society: Recognizing donors who include VWU in their estate plans, leaving a legacy that will benefit generations.
VWU also highlights additional recognition groups that celebrate donors on their journey of commitment and growing engagement:
- First-Time Donor: Honoring those who make their inaugural gift and take their first step into philanthropy.
- 1961 Club: Recognizing supporters who give $5.08 monthly (totaling $61 annually) in tribute to VWU’s founding year—providing steady support all year long.
- Bob Squad: Celebrating donors who have given for five or more consecutive years and exemplify unwavering dedication to the Marlin experience.
Philanthropy thrives on connection, and VWU’s refreshed Giving Societies serve as a meaningful way to celebrate the individuals who believe in the University’s mission. These groups are not transactional—they are communities of stewardship that foster pride, belonging, and long-term engagement. Each gift tells a story, and together these stories create opportunity, open doors, and keep the VWU spirit strong.
Giving Tuesday 2025 showcased what is possible when the Marlin community comes together with passion and purpose. Every gift, large or small, helps students dream bigger, learn deeper, and achieve more.
