The NPP program at VWU supports students who show strong leadership potential and motivation to serve, but who may need additional academic preparation or development to meet the rigorous demands of the NROTC program. It gives these students a structured path to succeed鈥攁cademically, physically, and morally鈥攂efore transitioning into a traditional four-year ROTC scholarship at VWU withing the Hampton Roads NROTC Consortium.
Eligible students:
- Incoming first-year students only who are 17-22 years old and have been accepted to VWU as full-time students
- U.S. citizens (or on track to become citizens)
- Need a year of academic and development before starting NROTC
- Show a commitment to military service and leadership
- Complete the FASFA and VWU NPP application
What does the NPP scholarship include?
- Tuition, housing, food, and fees are fully covered by VWU for the preparatory year
What to expect in the NPP program:
- Students take foundational academic courses (math, science, English)
- Participate in physical training, military drills, and character development
- Must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.8 and pass the Navy Physical Fitness Assessment
- Complete New Student Indoctrination at Great Lakes, IL
What happens after the preparatory year?
If students meet all requirements (2.8 GPA, passes Physical Readiness Test, medically qualified):
- Awarded a four-year national NROTC scholarship within the Hampton Roads NROTC Consortium and become official members of the Unit
- Continue to earn their degree at VWU while participating in NROTC activities
- On track to commission as officers in the U.S. Navy upon graduation with a 5-year commitment post commissioning
